I'm offering my used Line 6 Variax 600 for those of
you who want to experience guitar modeling wizardry but aren't quite ready to
pay the price for the new Variax JT line or the Fender/Roland G-5 Strat.
The Variax 600 features a contoured basswood body and a North American
maple neck and fretboard with classic feel and a traditional "skunk
stripe." The striking two-color sunburst finish and the tinted lacquer
on the neck gives this modern, hi-tech marvel a decidedly
retro look. Of course the lack of visible pickups makes most folks do a
double-take. The 600 is definitely eye-catching.
Before I get into all
of the whiz-bang electronics of the Variax, let me tell you about this
instrument solely from a guitar player's perspective. If the 25-1/2"
scale and 9-1/2" fingerboard radius feel VERY familiar and comfortable,
that is by design. Close your eyes and the maple-neck Variax 600 feels a
LOT like an American Strat, which is not a bad thing for most players.
Adding the custom L.R. Baggs tremolo bridge into the mix along with the
control layout and 5-way switch position makes every Fender-lover happy.
This is a professional-grade instrument that features exceptional build
quality. It's in absolutely pristine condition. I had the frets re-dressed
when I first bought it and its been professionally setup recently. It
plays like a dream.
OK, on to the electronics... if you're looking to bid on this you
probably already know everything about the Line 6 modeling technology
that makes the Variax 600 accurately reproduce the sounds of 50 electric
and acoustic instruments including the most classic sounding electric
guitars from Les Paul's to Tele's as well as acoustics like Martin and odd stringed sounds like
banjo and sitar. You can simply twist a knob and throw a switch to call
up a new sound whenever you want, making it possible to swap virtual
instruments in the middle of a tune. All of this wizardry is built
INSIDE the guitar so all you need to do is grab a standard 1/4" guitar
cable and plug it in to your favorite amp, pedalboard or recording rig
and start playing.

For
most folks this would be more than enough sounds to keep them busy for a
lifetime, however, if you have a bit of a geek-streak in you (like me) the real
fun begins when you connect the Variax digital I/O cable to the USB
interface (both included), which allows access to Line 6’s amazing Variax Workbench Guitar Creation software. This
option provides you with the tools to
create and virtually build the
guitar of your dreams.
The software enables you
to select from a complete list
of guitar bodies, choose pickups
and placement, even add
alternate tunings You can also tweak other
parameters to design guitar
models that are truly
one-of-a-kind.
The unique
interface allows you to see
and hear the physical changes as
you make them on your virtual guitar. Once
you've created your custom
guitars, model patches can saved
and you can download up to 12 models or tunings to your Variax for instant recall
when playing live!
When you play the Variax it's
easy to forget that it's amazing
array of sounds are coming from
microchips rather than magnetic
pickups, and that's the only
downside to this guitar.
All of these electronics take a fair amount of power to run and the Variax
requires six AA batteries for about 8-10 hours of playing time. If your
batteries die this guitar won't
make a sound. To cut down on the
waste and
expense of replacing batteries I am including 6 Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries along with
a wall plug style charger. IMPORTANT TIP: The on/off switch for this
guitar is in the input jack - so
if you leave this guitar plugged
in the batteries will die even
if you don't use it. ALWAYS
UNPLUG THE VARIAX WHEN YOU'RE
DONE PLAYING!
The last thing left for me to do is to show you pictures
of the actual guitar. Here it is, just about as perfect as the day I
bought it. It's really clean, no scratches, scuffs or dings. It has
never been gigged and it lived in a smoke-free home studio for years.
I'm only selling it because I just got a new modeling guitar and I
have no need to keep two of these. It comes with a high-quality Line 6
gig bag, USB interface, software & manual.
